Thee Midniters
Thee Midniters were one of the best-known acts to come out of East Los Angeles in the 1960s and one of the first Chicano rock bands to have a major hit with their 1964 cover of “Land of a Thousand Dances.”. Thee Midniters were among the first to openly sing about Chicano themes including “Chicano Power” and “The Ballad of César Chávez ” in the late 1960s. Along with bands like Los Blendells, Mark and The Escorts, The Premiers, and Cannibal and The Headhunters, Thee Midniters found success in blending their Chicanismo with rock and roll. In the process, they pioneered a sound that was unique to East Los Angeles.

These artists defined the sound of Mexican music in California during the heyday of the regional labels. In the process, many became icons. To the next generation, they left a heritage of both musical tradition and creativity which would keep Mexican music in California evolving through the postwar decades.
