The Mexican baseball star Fernando Valenzuela joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1980. In 1981, he became the only player to win both the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards. Valenzuela became a symbol of success for the Mexican American community, setting off the phenomenon known as “Fernandomania.” Valenzuela’s presence in the major leagues instilled pride in the established Chicano community as well as throughout the recent immigrant community.
